Green Construction
Ferris State University is committed to sustainable building design and construction. Therefore, in an effort to conserve resources, lower operating costs, and reduce construction and demolition wastes, the University has implemented the U.S. Building Green Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards on the East Campus Housing Project.
Residents of the East Campus Housing will also benefit as occupants of “green” buildings are typically healthier and more productive due to improved indoor air quality and lighting.
Some of the sustainable features of the East Campus Suites include:
- Underground stormwater detention system capable of holding over 174,000 gallons of water in order to regulate quality and quantity released from the site.
- Reduction of light pollution from site lighting.
- No potable water used for irrigation.
- 30% reduction in use of potable water from standard plumbing systems.
- Over 15% improvement in energy usage as compared to standard HVAC systems.
- Onsite collection location for recyclables.
- Maximized day lighting in occupied spaces.
- Thermal comfort controls for building occupants.
- Low-Emitting/Fuel Efficient Vehicle parking spaces.
- Covered bicycle storage.
